What? Andy Capp is sexist? No?!

Yo. Andy Capp is still running after all these years. Started in 1957 by British cartoonist Reg Smythe who died in 1998, the comic strip is now created by Rogers Mahoney and Kettle. This is one of those unfortunate instances where comics are kept going for too long.

Check this one out. Click it to enlarge.

Aren't we past the time where sexism equals humor? Is this funny? I'm a guy and I'm offended. Hey I'm not sayin' these aren't issues that comic strips shouldn't tackle. But that's not what Andy is about. He is known for his hostile, cutting remarks toward his wife. But it's the 21st century now, people. It's not cool to call your wife "pet" while demanding dinner.

Are you offended by such a strip or do you shrug off the crazy ol' outdated Andy? Leave a comment.

I shrug off the old bugger. Andy Capp is of no use to me whatsoever except as a vehicle to teach me working class English slang, which came in handy when I met my working class English husband. Other than that, it's been cringeworthy all these years and I don't expect it to change.

Elayne, well said. A "cringeworthy" comic strip is not worth getting all up in arms and upset over. Shrug it off. You say Andy Capp is of no use to you, right? But shouldn't the funny pages provide content that we do find useful? For a laugh, an introspective thought or a cultural commentary? I'm not saying everyone dislikes Andy, but how many more shrug-offs can the comics section handle? How many other strips are of no use to a lot of people?

Andy Capp was taken off the Toronto Star's comics page long ago when a strip ran where he threatened to beat his wife >.>;;

Mind you, half of the strips seem to be about them fighting physically... <.<

It was never funny regardless except maybe to aging British men who hate their wives? o_O

I dunno XD

I've never found Andy Capp remotely entertaining. In fact, newspaper comics in general leave me cold, since they tend to cater to an older, more conservative audience. I only ever read the funny pages for Foxtrot anyway, and now that it's gone weekly I don't even bother.

Anyway. The only good thing about Andy Capp is his hot fries.

1. Uh, isn't Andy Capp SUPPOSED to be a sexist lout?

2. This strip is still going while "Arnold", "Bloom County" and "Calvin & Hobbes" are no more? There's no justice!

Andy Capp sure isn't getting a good reputation around here. Yeah he is supposed to be sexist, it's part of the character. My point is that this isn't the 1950s anymore and Andy hasn't changed. But maybe his wife Flo has something to say about it.

Check out the other post about Andy Capp

Isn't it odd how England produces the worst, least funny comics known to man? There's Andy Capp, which is a one-joke strip where the joke is not funny. Wife-beating is even considered offensive these days. Then there's Fred Bassett, a no-joke strip that isn't particularly offensive, and Viz, which is offensive, but I guess that's okay, since it's meant to be. If you're repressed enough, it'll entertain you.

Are there any other English comics? Hunt Emerson, maybe, he's okay. Not brilliant, but okay.

Lighten up everyone. Do we have to live in a world where people complain that they are offended by comic strips?

While we're at it, lets attack the drunk jester in "Wizard of Id", the murderous "Hagar the Horrible", the well endowed sexy secretary in "Beetle Bailey", and the blatantly heathen talking animals in "Mutts", "Garfield" et al.

Remember freedom of expression? The politically correct, child-protecting, freedom encroaching lunatics are killing it.
