The video game industry is constantly growing and there are a lot of new games being released into the market all the time. Console gaming, in particular, has made great strides in the industry. However, PC gaming remains to be a highly competitive market with several big names that had established their reputation as among the industry’s staples. Little is known about the PC gaming technology though and it is important to look into them to create a better understanding and appreciation of the modern PC games.

The installation of PC games create a lot of demand on the computer’s central processing unit (CPU). Thus, it is important to meet the hardware requirements specified for a particular game before you opt to install and play it on your computer. In 2005, most PC manufacturers had utilized multi-core CPUs that enable your computer to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. For this reason, the computer is able to support complex graphics, in-game physics, artificial intelligence, and other basic components required to efficiently run a PC game.

3D games do have special requirements though because they need to have graphics processing unit to allow the complex scenes to be displayed in real time with such precision. This is often integrated to the computer motherboard for optimum performance. Meanwhile, sound cards are also installed onto the computer to improve the quality of the game’s audio. They provide 3D audio to deliver audio enhancement, which is crucial to make every scene in the video game seem more realistic and compelling for the players.

Depending on the type of games played, there are other hardware requirements needed for each game. These include joysticks, gamepads, or steering wheels. Most PC games will come shipped with the required accessories to play the game so there should be no problem in finding one yourself. However, you do need to properly connect and sync these accessories in order for them to work efficiently.

PC games utilize software manufactured by third-party in order to run effectively. Most games are supported by the Microsoft Windows operating system, though. However, you need to verify with the game developer to determine what are the requirements when it comes to the operating system or application programming interface (or API). Most game developers utilize their own game engine though, which is why it is important to pay close attention to the specifications of each game to run efficiently.

There are various types of PC games available for you to play, but the most popular ones include local area network (LAN) gaming, emulation and online games. In a LAN game, several players can play cooperatively or competitively via a given local area network. This is the most popular choice of PC gaming before broadband internet access was introduced.

Meanwhile, emulator games require the use of an emulator software because the game does not run without it. This particular software is designed to mimic the performance of a hardware architecture to ensure accurate game representation. Finally, online PC games require internet connection in order for you to play and stay connected with other players. This makes it possible to play with or against gamers from various parts of the world.

If you experienced trouble upgrading your iPod and iPhone to iOS 5, you are not alone. These problems range from bricked phones, erased contacts, or lengthy downloads. Some even noted that the previous apps they have downloaded into their Apple device have been erased as well. Sadly, most of these changes were not restored even after they had managed to run the iOS into their iPod or iPhone. The most common problem experienced by Apple users involved having a bricked phone following the upgrade attempt (attributed to up to 50% of all Apple users).

This prompted all iPhone users to discuss these issues on the internet in forums and social media sites. If you are still attempting an upgrade, it pays to know how you can deal with these errors and what is the recommended fix (if any). Make sure to follow the recommendations or consult an expert if you are not sure how to go about the procedure.

“Error -34″ – This type of error usually results from lack of disk space. However, this is not always the case. There is no known fix yet for this type of error. But it has been determined that this error might come as a result of trying to compress your music files.

“Error 1603″ – The reason for this error remains unknown but many suspect that it will automatically place your unit into recovery mode as soon as the error is displayed. However, you won’t be able to see that with the new update. This is what is commonly referred to as “bricked”. In order to address this error, get your phone into a forced recovery mode. If you are able to recover your phone, you can also restore all of the data it contains. Thus, experts recommend that you backup your data first before performing this upgrade.

“Internal Error 3200″ – This is a typical error that Apple users encounter. It signifies that the Apple servers aren’t responding properly to your request for an upgrade. According to experts, this is the easiest out of all the problems to fix because it happened only because of the sheer volume of Apple users trying to perform the upgrade upon launch, thus overwhelming the servers. Apple has slowly opened up a new server space to accommodate its users trying to perform the upgrade.

Another effective technique to troubleshoot your iPod or iPhone after a failed upgrade is to switch into a forced recover mode. You can do this by disconnecting the USB cable from your Apple device. However, you must keep the other end connected with your computer’s USB port. Choose the Sleep or Wake button in order to turn off your unit. This will prompt a red slider to appear on-screen. Wait until the device completely shuts off.

Hold the Home button as you attempt to reconnect your iPhone using the USB cable. This will cause the device to power on by itself once you have connected the device. However, you must not release the Home button. Wait until the message “Connect to iTunes” appears on-screen. Only then must you release the button. Follow the prompts as you move on with this procedure.

First impressions from the Motorola Atrix 4G smartphone show an extremely fast processor with numerous impressive features. But will this smartphone live up to the hype? This review will attempt to answer this question and more.

Key Options That Come With The Motorola Atrix 4G

Rough Cost: $284 – $700
Release Year: 2011
Operating-system: Android 2.2
Size: 4.62 x 2.5 x .43
Weight: 4.76 oz
Storage Options: 16 GB internal (expands up to 48GB)
Processor: 1 GHz nVidia Tegra 2 Dual
Screen: 4 inch touch screen
Resolution: 960 x 540 pixels
Cameras: 5 Mega pixel Primary Camera/ VGA front-facing camera
Internet: 4G, HSDPA, 3rd generation, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
Battery Existence: 9 hrs talk-time, 264 hrs standby
Company: AT&T

Advantages Of The Motorola Atrix 4G

Processor: The inclusion from the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor implies that this really is one fast smartphone – among the first mobile phones available on the market to include a dual core processor! You will find that applications start up very rapidly, web browsing is simple, and you will play a variety of games effortlessly. In a nutshell, it’s like getting a great computer that fits in your pocket! This sets the Atrix apart when compared to other smartphone out there on the market right now.

Screen: A 4 inch screen is fairly standard when it comes to smartphones. It’s the resolution featured on the Motorola Atrix 4G that helps it to stand out from its rivals. At 960 x 540 pixels, the only phone that exceeds it is the Apple iPhone 4. The image is sharp and appears fantastic when playing videos or games.

Revolutionary Docks: The Motorola Atrix 4G includes some notable dock add-ons that may be hinting at where the smartphone marketplace is headed soon.

First, you receive an HD dock that’ll allow you to connect the smartphone up to a big screen TV. Even though you could accomplish this by having an high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cable, using the dock provides you with the advantage of controlling everything with an infra red controller. You’ll have the ability to navigate the internet, access all your smartphone content, watch videos and much more. You will also benefit from the added USB ports with this dock.

The following dock may be the most impressive factor relating to this smartphone. This really is essentially a laptop, but without all of the software installed. It is a screen along with a keyboard that springs to life whenever you connect your Motorola Atrix 4G. You’ll have the ability to browse the net while using full Firefox browser, plus anything else that’s saved on your smartphone. Additionally, it features its own battery, and that means you can power your Atrix from the dock battery and the internal battery stays fully charged for use later on.

A charging and syncing dock can also be purchased, just like a number of other tablets, but it is the 2 docks above which have really impressed Atrix owners. Keep in mind, however, this laptop dock will set you back around $500.

Webtop: Continuing on from the point above, the Motorola Atrix 4G comes with a “webtop” on top of the Android operating system. It’s actually a completely different system, and will let you perform a number of different functions on the laptop dock accessory. Motorola really is bridging the gap between the smartphone and laptop computer.

MotoBlur: Another unique feature of the Motorola Atrix 4G is the MotoBlur customized interface. This adds a number of unique features, notably the ability to pull all your social networking accounts into one to help you manage them better. It also stores the data on Motorola’s servers so you can transfer it from one Motorola device to another, and lets you arrange your own widgets on up to three unique home screens.

Fingerprint Sensor: On the back of this smartphone you’ll find a fingerprint reader that’ll help you add an extra level of security to the device. This is likely just a gimmick for most users, but will come in handy if you want to make sure that it only gives access when you swipe your fingerprint.

Battery Life: Anything as advanced as this is going to use up more battery, but thankfully Motorola have made up for this with a big battery that is one of the best in the smartphone world. It means you can expect around 9 hours of talk time on a 3G connection, and 250-264 hours on standby.

Camera: The Atrix comes with a 5 megapixel camera on the back of the device, and a VGA camera on the front for video calls. The main camera is middle of the range in terms of top smartphones, but has some useful features like an LED flash, autofocus, and the ability to capture 720p HD video.

Memory: There’s a decent amount of space built into the Motorola Atrix 4G as standard. It comes with 16GB, though you can add as much as 32GB extra thanks to the microSD card slot.

Drawbacks Of The Motorola Atrix 4G

Expensive: The price of the Motorola Atrix 4G is up there with the Apple iPhone 4 – meaning it costs a lot! This really isn’t surprising, though, given that Motorola are trying to provide so much more than just a phone with this device. If you want to buy any of the revolutionary docks then this is going to cost you even more, probably as much as a high end laptop (it’s the price you pay for portability).

Should You Buy The Motorola Atrix 4G

As you can see, the only real drawback of this device is the price – but it’s a big drawback given just how much this will cost compared to buying a more traditional laptop. However, the Motorola Atrix 4G will run faster than just about anything you’ve ever seen before, it has the top speed 4G internet connectivity option, and has the potential to become one of the bestselling smartphones out there.

The HTC Evo 4G was the very first 4G smartphone to be produced in the United States. Although there are now a variety of other 4G rivals, how exactly does the Evo compare with the other 4G devices out there? Would it be worth getting hold of one?

Key Features Of The HTC Evo 4G

Rough Price: $160 to $500
Release Year: 2010
Operating System: Android 2.3
Size: 4.8 x 2.6 x 0.5
Weight: 6 oz
Storage Options: 8 GB included, micro-SD expandable up to 32GB
Processor: 1GHz Snapdragon
Screen: 4.3 WVGA capacitive touchscreen
Resolution: 800 x 480 pixels
Cameras: 8 MP Main Camera/ 1.3 MP front-facing camera
Internet: 4G, HSDPA, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
Battery Life: 5.2 hours talk time, 146 hours standby
Service Provider: Sprint

Primary Advantages Of The HTC Evo 4G

4G Connectivity: As pointed out previously, 4G has been the main selling point with this device. 4G is another type of mobile broadband connection which means you will always have the ability to get connected to the internet even if out of range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The beauty of 4G is the fact that it’s a whole lot faster compared to 3G or HSDPA – the technologies currently available to the majority of users. The actual data transfer rates depend upon the network, but Sprint claim you ought to be able to obtain typical download speeds of between 3 and 6 Mb per second when you use your Evo. In case your location isn’t served by 4G (which is definitely an expanding technology) you’ll be able to still connect to 3G broadband.

Hotspot Functionality: Apart from the 4G connectivity features, you will have the cabability to turn your phone into a hotspot for other gadgets. As much as eight Wi-Fi enabled devices may be connected to share your 3G or 4G connection, which can be very handy if you wish to connect your laptop computer or perhaps gaming system in places you wouldn’t normally be able to! Needless to say, this function does add a little to your monthly bill.

Screen: The display on this device is larger compared to what you will see with some others, having an excellent quality 4.3 inch display. The dimensions of this particular screen is somewhat larger than the majority of smartphones available for sale at this time, which does make a difference while browsing internet pages as well as executing other tasks. Every little bit of space is important if you are looking at a device as small as a smartphone!

High Quality Camera: The digital camera in the HTC Evo 4G is among the best you can find on a current smartphone. Equipped with 8 megapixels, it is possible to capture very good quality images and HD movies. The front camera comes in at 1.3 MP for making video calls, which is a great tool to include on a smartphone.

Video Calls: While we’re talking about video calling, the included Qik chat application enables you to make video calls even to individuals who don’t possess a compatible phone. With some other smartphones, the other person is generally required to have the same software. But Qik chat on the HTC Evo 4G may be used to talk with anyone who has the application installed on his or her PC.

Design: The appearance of this phone looks quite good especially considering the size of the display screen. One helpful feature is a snap out stand at the rear of the product. This allows you to prop it up to view videos and movies hands-free.

Call Quality: The call quality on the HTC Evo 4G is remarkably good, regardless of whether you’re using standard calls or the speakerphone.

HTC Sense: On the HTC smartphones, you are going to generally notice that the HTC Sense user interface has been placed over the top of the Android os which adds additional functionality and provides the unit a unique way of operating.

If you are a tech geek who actually prefers Android just the way it is then you possibly will not be pleased about this fact. Nonetheless, HTC Sense does genuinely add something to the interface. Since Android can occasionally be somewhat complicated for the user, HTC Sense helps to keep things as simple to use as possible. Additionally, it provides a number of widgets and tools that can help pull all of your social networking accounts into one place. It’s very user friendly and genuinely looks great.

Controls: The HTC Evo 4G comes with an excellent touch screen keyboard. It doesn’t feel cramped when you’re using it (thanks to the slightly larger screen), and is easy to type with a good level of accuracy. This smartphone also makes use of four touch-sensitive navigation buttons below the screen that help make it easy to access your menu or search everything on the phone.

Connections: The HTC Evo 4G comes with a standard micro-USB port and a Type D connector HDMI port. This means, with the right cable, you can connect the phone up to your TV to view your photos or videos on a bigger screen.

Drawbacks Of The HTC Evo 4G

Size: The HTC Evo 4G does look a little chunky thanks to its bigger screen, and this is a noticeable difference to some of the older HTC smartphone models. It’s also larger and thicker than some of the top smartphone players out there, such as the Apple iPhone 4.

However, most people will be able to put up with this once they see just how good the screen looks on this phone.

Limited 4G: When buying any 4G smartphone it’s always crucial to realize that 4G is not available to everyone at the moment. Always check with the cell phone carrier that you’ll be able to access 4G in your area before making your buying decision on the inclusion of 4G alone.

Battery Life: A large screen like this is bound to use up quite a lot of battery life, unfortunately. Talk time battery life is low at just over four hours, and standby is a measly 146 hours. This is one of the poorest batteries of all the smartphones on the market, so be prepared to use energy saving tricks (such as turning off Wi-Fi, lowering brightness etc.) if you want to get the most out of this smartphone.

Should You Buy The HTC Evo 4G?

With a good quality camera, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and a middle-of-the-range price, the HTC Evo 4G is one of the best Android smartphones available to buy, especially if you live in an area where you can take advantage of the superior 4G download speeds!

The Superpad 10.2 inch tablet computer is a budget Android tablet that is surprisingly well featured when considering the very reasonable price. At around $200, it competes nicely with similar devices that are available and was shipped quickly from the manufacturer.

The touch screen is 10.2 inches, and is resistive rather than capacitive. This can cause some problems, and when the device was first unboxed the screen was very inaccurate. Calibration helped, making the onscreen keyboard letters line up correctly. Unfortunately it did not remove the tendency for the screen to wobble, or flicker from side to side when trying to scroll or type. Resolution was ok, but didn’t seem as clear as the claimed 1024×600 should be.

The processor is supposed to be a 1GHz processor, but this did not honestly respond like a 1Ghz processor should do. It was somewhat slow compared to other devices whose speed has been confirmed, but for a tablet in this price range it performed as about expected. There is 256MB of RAM included, which ran Android well.

The internal storage of the tablet is just 2GB, and around half of this is eaten up by the Android operating system. Thankfully there are two slots for micro SD cards, each of which can support up to 16GB, bringing a total of 34GB of storage to this device. With the fact that the cards can be removed and replaced with another, empty card when it is filled up, this is more than sufficient.

There are also two USB ports included, and this allows you to connect to a USB flash drive, or external hard drive for more storage. Perhaps more usefully, the USB connections can be used to connect a keyboard and mouse to the tablet, allowing you to type on a fully sized keyboard. This is far easier than using the on-screen keyboard, and faster too. Both keyboard and mouse responded well.

A webcam is built into the tablet, and though it’s quality isn’t great, it is sufficient for supporting video chat, which works well. GPS is also advertised, but is a little misleading. There is no GPS chip built into the tablet, but instead a GPS antennae that you need to plug in. Once in place it works well, but the size of the tablet meant that it wouldn’t fit into the majority of cradles-a specialist, large cradle would be needed in order to use this as a sat nav system.

Disappointingly the only charging was via a wall charger, and it was proprietary. USB charging is becoming the standard today, and so the fact that this required a special charger was inconvenient and worrying, since it means that it must always be carried.

There are a lot of drawbacks to this cheap tablet, but those should be viewed in comparison to the other tablets that cost around the same amount. In it’s price range this performs well, with fast internet over WiFi, and limited video support, making it one of the better choices for a cheap tablet for mobile browsing, or as a gift for kids.

Back in the day there was a popular and thriving operating system called Unix. It was stable. It was fast. And because it was open source, anyone could take it and develop it. Surprisingly, the fact that it could be developed caused its eventual downfall when various developers took the OS in different directions. The end result was that the operating systems became so different from each other that software would no longer run except on the version it was developed for.

This same fragmentation is in danger of happening to Google’s mobile operating system-known as Android, too. Android’s problems are being caused by the fact that so many different phones use the system, and the fact that there are now so many different versions of Android in use. This is making it very hard for applications developers to create apps that will work across all phone models, and all versions of the operating system.

Android currently runs on a wide range of devices, from the more modest models with processors around 500mhz, to the more expensive models that have more memory, and faster processors. Other hardware that is included in the phones differs just as much, with differences in graphics capability and screen size being of the biggest concern. Apps are currently expected to support phones with phones whose screen size ranges from a tiny 2.55 inches, up to the larger 4.2 inch models. Worse, there are tablets running Android, at up to 10 inches, support for which will only fully be realized in Android 3.0 (Honeycomb).

Another problem that is making itself known is the fact that many cellular companies add their own skin, or other apps to the stock Android distribution. Software additions such as the HTC Sense interface are loved by some and hated by many, and bring functionality to their phones that others don’t have. If an app developer were to develop with this in mind, only a small subset of users may be able to use the apps.

Google are concerned about the possible difficulties that this fragmentation could cause and are hoping to address that. There are possibilities for reducing the impact that fragmentation may have on both developers and on the user experience, and Google has now taken its first steps towards it.

Google have included in the Honeycomb release, a ‘fragments API’. This will be a kit of code that will allow applications developers to call on fragments, and even though they are not built into the core of the operating system they will be able to use them to make applications compatible with older versions of the system. The aim is provide support back through to version 1.6 of the operating system.

The fact remains that developing apps for Android remains a challenging task. Thanks to Google’s awareness of how the problem is growing, it can now be hoped that the challenge won’t be made any greater by a growing fragmentation of this mobile operating system.

You can be more self sufficient and help the environment at the same time with a wind up charger for home or travel. Knowing that there is a backup source of power in case of emergency provides great peace of mind. Even during a brownout, you’ll be able to charge that cell phone, listen to a radio or finish up that last bit of work on your laptop before powering down. Once the domain of survivalists, the windup battery charger has now gone mainstream.

Emergency chargers come in all sorts of options for different applications, so a little research goes a long way in determining which model is best for your needs. We’re going get you started by taking a look at three popular choices.

Gazelle Pedal Power Generator

The Gazelle is a uniquely interesting contraption that features a very efficient generator which works using pedal power. Whatever power the user pedals into it can then be tapped into through either a standard socket, USB, or DC out. The 7Ah / 12V VRLA battery power centre is ideal for taking on road trips or when caravanning as a pretty nifty source of ad-hoc power. It provides exercise, saves the environment whenever you charge things from it instead of the wall outlets, and is handy in an emergency. Brown outs need not be a problem. It has such a wide range of power-out options it can charge everything. From mobiles phones to notebooks it’s hard to imagine a low power device it can’t help out. As well as peddle power the battery of the gazelle can also be charged up using an AC adapter for power outlet or DC charger for car. As if that wasn’t enough he gazelle’s portable battery component features an LED flashlight built into it that has a powerful beam, and will surely come in handy.

Wind Up Torch Charger

If the gazelle is overkill then what could be better than a simple wind up torch that also charges mobile phones? Of course when it comes to mobile phone charging accessories there are many on the market, some don’t perform quite as expected or are just simply too noisy to use in the situations they would be most useful, e.g. at night. The great thing about having a wind up torch charger is being able to recharge a mobile whenever needed. It’s not easy having to find an outlet in order to power up. This device saves the trouble. It also comes with all the adaptors that could ever be needed.

Powerplus Elephant Eco Powerstation

The big brother of the Gazelle, the Powerplus Elephant Eco Powerstation is the ultimate gadget for the environmentally self conscious. Not only does it allow for all the perks of the gazelle but also adds to the mix a very powerful 200A jump starter that can be used to get a stalled car up and running. The other major difference between them is that the powerplus elephant is much more portable than the gazelle which has the cumbersome peddle power base. Though that base has been forgone with the Elephant Eco, it does mean that its method of generating power is with a hand crank. This might be more inefficient than peddle power. Nevertheless the increased portability does make the elephant a far more practical proposition.

Overall each of these three devices adds something new and interesting in the backup power department and are well worth their cost, especially for those who tend to be far away from civilization and easy sources of electricity.

It’s interesting that while Nintendo are upsizing their latest DS model, Sony have taken their Playstation Portable and made it smaller. So which is the best? It’s a bit like comparing apples to oranges, but we’re going to give it a try anyway.

Let’s start by comparing each model’s size to it’s last incarnation. The Nintendo DSi XL has two screens; that are about 93% larger than on the Nintendo DS Lite. The Sony PSP Go is around 43% smaller than the previous PSP. Both companies have released these portable game gadgets in addition to the devices already available. The result is that they give gamers more choices and options rather than replace the older models. Could this mean that the new models are simply experiments that aren’t necessarily here to stay? I’ll let you chew on that for a few moments. Let’s continue with our comparison…

Form factor

The DSi is great for sitting at a desk, and has a very good base that sticks nicely to the table so it won’t slide about. It’s also portable, and just a nice weight to hold. Similarly the PSP was built to be small, light, and portable. It’s certainly a more wieldy creature than its predecessor. The irony is that because the DSi is a clamshell design, its screens are protected, and it feels far safer to carry it around than the PSP, which usually demands a carry case for those of us who hate to see the screen getting scratched. So for portability it’s hard to pick a clear winner, and depends on personal preference. If content to throw the PSP go in a pocket and hope for the best, then it does nudge ahead of the DSi.

Screens

The Nintendo DSi XL sports two 4.2” touch screens whereas the Sony PSP has a single 3.8 inch wide screen. The DSi offers a much wider viewing angle than its predecessor, whereas the PSP is all about portability. Here the Nintendo DSi is a winner. Smaller is not always better. A gaming device just cries out for a larger screen, and games can be enjoyed much better and in a much more natural way.

Game delivery

Both devices say good bye to physical games. The DSi doesn’t support cartridges and the PSP go has gotten rid of UMDs. Both get their games off of WiFi and memory sticks.

Controls

The DSi XL has its beautiful screens and of course it’s biggest feature is the touch screen that gives the player much more control than is possible with direction pads. For core games there’s still the d-pad and buttons. The PSP on the other hand has always been a very serious gaming device and only has the controls. One big plus is the inclusion of an analogue stick, but Sony’s refusal to ever take any opportunity to add a second analogue stick is exasperating. It makes first person shooters unplayable on the PSP, which is a shame because they are overly common among the new releases. This puts the PSP in the uncomfortable position of being a hardcore gaming device that’s useless for the most hardcore of gaming genres.

Internet

Both devices have internet connectivity through WiFi, but good luck browsing the web on the PSP. The Nintend DSi XL isn’t the greatest device for surfing the web, but it clearly trumps the PSP. Typing on the DSi XL using the touchscreen is fairly easy and browsing up and down a web page using the stylus is a breeze. The PSP on the other hand is not as smooth, navigation and typing with the direction pad is a much less attractive proposition.

Ebooks

Both devices are intended to support ebooks. The DSi has a design that makes books a more interesting proposition, though both devices will no doubt function very well.

Looking at the hardware it’s very hard to pick between them, but the DSi XL does have a few more things going for it. Without considering games, which is a big part of any decision, and going on hardware and functionality alone, it’s clear that bigger is better in this instance.

Tablet PCs, as popular as they are these days, do lack one serious feature and that is a good input device. Although wonderful for surfing for information and consuming media, they are not very versatile when it comes to entering information. Like tablets, netbooks are portable devices, but they are also mini laptops that allow you to get some productivity in. Still, they aren’t as easy to relax with as tablets are.

The Lenovo S10-3t 0651-37U 10.1-Inch Multitouch Netbook solves this problem nicely by being both, featuring a swivelling touch screen that converts it between tablet and netbook modes. It’s very easy to get up and running and can be on and operational in less than ten minutes from the moment of getting your hands on it. Thereafter it features snappy enough bootup times as well as Quick Start 2.0 instant on. At startup a range of things will ask to be configured but after that there’s little else to do except uninstall the anti-virus software that comes with it to put in something a little lighter.

The touch screen is of course the biggest draw of this device and while it’s clear it’s no iPad killer, it’s still a very capable display and responsive enough. It does take a little practice, but after that things are great. The windows XP verson of the netbook is bundled with Lenovo’s custom software called Lenovo Natural Touch that provides the iPhone like experience to go along with the touch screen. The software installed has been designed to let you have your iPhone like touchscreen fun, with pinch, zoom, swiping and so forth letting you manipulate things on the screen. A windows 7 version is also available, and that has even better support for touch screens.

The 10.1 inch display has an LED backlight and works in 16:9 widescreen. It features the usual 1024×600 netbook resolution that we all know and love. Nor is it much off the iPad’s 1024×768. It’s certainly easy on the eyes and can be flipped around to provide viewing in horizontal or portrait. Portrait is great for ebook viewing while horizontal is better for surfing.

The rest of the specs are again very normal fare for netbooks. 1.66GHz processor means that it’s not going to be the fastest device in the world. The true test came when trying to play videos on YouTube, which safe to say it passed with flying colours and no stuttering. The 8 cell battery offers 10 hours of life, perfect for the working day. 1GB of memory is all good and well, but it would be great to see manufacturer’s try to up the specs of netbooks a little. The device has an ample 250GB of disk space.

There is an SD card slot so pictures can be easily transferred from camera. This netbook would be a great choice for taking on holiday and using as a reservoir for all the holiday snaps. The touchscreen facilitates make browsing through photos great fun in a very natural way. As with most netbooks don’t expect too much from the speakers. Taking a set of USB powered laptop speakers may be advisable if it’s to be used to watch movies, or play older games. Headphones are ideal if it’s being used as a personal movie player.

As an ebook reader there are a few choices. The most popular would be Amazon Kindle, or Mobipocket (which is also owned by Amazon), Microsoft Reader, or Adobe’s Reader. At 5.7 pounds it’s fairly light and as easy to hold as most books. For reading it may not rival an actual Kindle, but it goes up against an iPad very well.

The keyboard on netbooks are a bit of a touchy subject, as people tend to have very personal feelings about whether the smaller keys are practical enough to facilitate a lot of typing. The Lenovo has a decent keyboard that may seem rather small to those who aren’t used to the form factor of netbooks, but it’s useable. Perhaps not the kind of thing that a writer would want to write novels on, but more than adequate enough for most people’s uses. Certainly it exceeds those of tablet devices.

Overall the Lenovo Multitouch Netbook solves many of the problems inherent with tablet devices and does so without making any drastic compromises. It’s easy to see this as a very strong contender.

There is an interesting trend with gadgetry where the add-ons are almost as necessary as the gadget itself in order to have the best owner experience. Do we really need gadgets for our gadgets now? And what comes next? Gadgets for the gadgets for our gadgets?

When shopping for a new gadget, it’s no longer enough to budget for the device itself. You will almost certainly experience sticker shock when you find out that you actually need this and that accessory in order to protect or get the most out of the new product. This being the case, it’s important to fully do your homework before plopping down your hard-earned cash on a new toy.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common gadgets for your gadgets.

Headphones

Where would our gadgetry be without a way to keep all the music and sound effects from scaring or annoying everyone around us? Headphones are a staple of the gadgetry age. If price is no object then The Klipsch Image S4 earphones provide a sound quality that is hard to rival, and includes very effective noise cancellation. Better yet, they can rank themselves among the most comfortable in their price bracket.

iPhone needs pampered

Nothing has spawned new accessories quite like the iPhone. If you’re investing in an iPhone then you surely need to protect your investment, and that’s where the iSkin Enigma iPhone case comes in. It’s a very attractive silicon case which features a metallic finish and Napa leather. It protects the screen with soft silicone, and is lined with a microfiber inside to protect its precious cargo. Better yet, it works with Apple’s iPhone dock, which you will naturally need to buy as well.

Kinect

So you forked out your money and got an X-Box 360, and thought you were done? Unfortunately not. The good people at Microsoft have found a way to sting you again. No, the controllers you got with your X-Box aren’t good enough anymore. In a very gimmicky Nintendo Wii kind of way it’s time to throw your controllers out the window, because YOU are the controller – or so a very expensive marketing campaign would have you believe. Just don’t throw yourself at the TV or accidentally kick Great Auntie Bertha’s Ming Dynasty Era Vase off the mantelpiece while flailing about trying to control the game.

The ill-fated Gadget’s Gadget

Manufacturer’s are nowadays quick to avoid the fate of Sega during their overzealous post-Mega Drive years. First they released the powerbase converter which slotted into the top of the Mega Drive to provide backwards compatibility with the Master System. Then they released the Mega CD in 1991 which slotted into the side and provided enhanced graphical capabilities and CD Rom support. Three years later they did it again with the 32X which slotted into the top. By this point the public were unenthusiastic about the prospect of buying yet another gimmicky add on for their mega drive and developer support had shifted to the upcoming Sega Saturn.

Give your mouse some WoW

Treat your gaming computer to a World of Warcraft themed add on, and check out the Cataclysm MMO Gaming mouse. It is a premium gaming mouse with all the bells and whistles associated with them. With 14 buttons, it’s easy to be in complete control of the action in game. It has a very high sensitivity and high degree of customizability with all 14 buttons being programmable, over 130 presets available and LED lights that have four pulsation effects.

So next time you look for high tech toys and gadgets, do consider treating your gadgetry to some gadgetry of its own. Just hope that your gadgets’ gadgets aren’t needing any add-ons of their own any time soon.
